2008 Season

Nothing to do with Spedeworth V8s but they did generate some interest
when the pictures first appeared on the site:
Do you remember the old 'Bozzy' pictures that were on the site?
It turns out that it wasn't 'Bozzy'!

Alan Broughton built this car in late 80's after seeing the original Bozzy.
Garry Broughton raced it, with the number 46. It later raced with the number 252..
The car still sits in Alan Broughton's field in a village called Huttotft, near Skegness,
It is also believed that it had both V6 & V8 power at some stage.

Thanks to Alan Broughton Jnr for the info

BOVINGDON, 30th March
World Champion Goodswen off the mark -
Guinchard takes final, just!

Race Winners, Colin Goodswen(72) & Mark Guinchard (183)

After two wet Wimbledon meetings the V8 Stock Cars produced some excellent racing
at Bovingdon, on a glorious sunny dry day. Mark Guinchard (183) got off to a flyer in heat 1
but found himself back with the others due to the yellows being shown. As the race restarted,
Alan Gray(521) managed to take the lead position from Guinchard. No sooner had he done
so, the reds came out for another incident on the track and the race was deemed to be over.
Although leading at the time of the stoppage, Gray was relegated to second as per the rules
with regards race stoppages.
Heat two was again full of action with the bumpers going in hard throughout the race. Peter
Gray(125) caused havoc on the pits bend as he lost a core plug, throwing water onto the track.

Gray himself spun and was left stationary in the middle of the track, Pete Ross(547) hitting
the gray car head on a short while after. Once again the yellows came out in order to remove
a car in a precarious position. World Champion Colin Goodswen(72) soon made the lead his
on the restart and stayed there to record his first win of the season.

The Final exceeded all expectations, particularly after what the V8s had produced in the
heats. Bumpers were going in hard once again and cars were littered around the track.
Simon Turner(324) spectacularly rolled coming out of a bend and ended up sitting
on top of the fence.

Rollover pics sequence by Rosemary Turner
The yellows came out because of the Turner incident and a
restart was due. Guinchard was the lead car but the likes of Gray(521) Scott(98)& Burton(7)
were just behind. As the green flag dropped Gray took the lead but no sooner had he done
so, retired due to engine problems. Guinchard was away being chased by Scott & Burton
with five laps to go. Burton eventually passed Scott and set about catching Guinchard with
only a couple of laps remaining. Like Wimbledon, Burton found himself behind the leader
going into the final bend. Guinchard, anticipating a big one from Burton, went in a little too
fast causing him to go wide. Burton, who wasn't really close enough to have moved
Guinchard initially, now saw a gap appear and went for it, his car moving alongside the
Guinchard car on the exit of the bend. With one turning left and the other right, there was
still no knowing who the victor would be. In the run up to the line it was Guinchard who
just held on to take the chequered flag by a couple of feet from Burton.
All in all, the V8s produced some tremendous racing and once again showed what a
great formula it is. Good to see 'Dirty' Bertie (27) back out on the track, living up to his
name. Likewise, Dave Bessent(298) in his second V8 meeting & Jimmy Rispin(155)
returning to the V8s.

Their performance also prompted Deane Wood to call an 'instant' drivers
meeting in order to congratulate everybody on their performance and stating that it was the
best V8 racing he had ever seen.

WIMBLEDON, 23rd March

Ross takes the London Championship having survived a last
bend lunge from Burton. Alan Gray won both the heats.

Peter Ross (547) took a deserved London Championship at Wimbledon on March 23rd.
Having finished second in each of the heats, to Alan Gray (521), he drove superbly in the
final, despite the efforts of David Burton (7). Burton had used the bumper to good effect on
Ross, and take the lead. Ross however returned the compliment, retaking the lead. All eyes
were on the pair as they entered the last bend but despite a lunge from Burton, Ross was
just far enough in front to hold on and take the win.

MEETING REPORT by Julie Gray
The season for the V8 stock cars started in a similar way to the culmination of the 2007 season with a wet meeting at
Wimbledon for the first round of the Mr Excavator Challenge series, kindly sponsored by Mr Excavator himself,
Colin Moss, who was also participating in his first V8 stock car race, number 85.
Bryan Scott, 89, was a non starter due to developing mechanical problems just prior to the start.
A new grading list which was issued at the beginning of February saw a few changes to the grading order with,
amongst others, Simon Turner, 324 starting in the red grade, Alan Gray, 521 downgraded to Blue and
Dennis Harris taking the coveted silver roof.

Race 1 victor, Peter Scott Jnr was using the Bill Chance(117) car.

Race 1 – Colin ‘Mr Excavator’ Moss, 85 took the early lead followed by Peter Gray, 125; Rob Beale, 2 who was
making a welcome return to racing following a season’s lay off, Alan Gray, 521; Peter Ross, 547 who was
playing his ‘joker’ for this meeting. Brad Moss, 815; Peter Scott jnr., 99 and Simon Turner, 324 who was making
a good start from the red grade. The race had to be stopped early on to allow Peter Blomfield’s car to be removed
from its precarious position on the pit bend where it had come to a stop.
The restart saw 125 lead the pack from 85, 2, 521, 547 and 99 who worked his way through the field to take the
lead and hold his position until the chequered flag dropped. The race ended and the meeting also ended for
newly crowned World Champion Colin Goodswen, 72 when his engine let go.

Colin Goodswen(72), World & European Champion.

Race 2 – 85 was the early leader from 125, 815, 547, 521 and 99 who passed the 521 car followed by David
Burton, 7. A good race was developing between 547 and 521 while 7 was on a charge and took up the lead and
held that position to take the chequered flag.

 Final – The lead pack was 85, 125, 521, 547, 815, 324 and 99. Again 547 and 521 were having a good race
until 815 spun 521. Meanwhile David Burton had been making his way from the back to the front of the pack and took
up the lead from 547, 815, silver roof Dennis Harris, 34, Simon Turner, 324 who had a very good meeting from the
red grade and 521. The number 7 car was unstoppable and took the chequered flag for a well deserved final win.

All change! Peter Scott(98) was using Pete Guymer's car

Peter Gray, 125, was awarded the white/yellow trophy, plus a cash award.

Peter Gray(125)

So the V8s are up and running in 2008, as is the Mr Excavator 'Big Money' Challenge Series.
Despite the track conditions they put on a fair show.
What we need now is for the other V8 drivers to attend the next meeting and blow the
cobwebs off their cars as well.

2007 Season
8th April - Wimbledon. A good turnout of cars provided some fantastic racing on the Plough Lane oval & kept the large Easter Sunday crowd entertained throughout. If this showing is anything to go on the V8 stock cars are in for their best season to date.

* Deane Wood has confirmed that he will race a F1 later in the year, as reports had suggested on a couple of websites. When asked if he would be prepared to race a Spedeworth V8, he replied "Yes, anytime".
If  anyone has a car that Deane could use for a meeting (or two), please email RosemaryTurner at  theboss_52@hotmail.com
He also reiterated what was said at the drivers meeting, that he likes the formula and wishes it to be a success.

This is what the Ipswich Evening Star had to say about the V8s:

Entertaining evening at Foxhall Stadium
25 April 2007 / 16:00

An excellent entry produced an entertaining evening at Foxhall Stadium, Ipswich, on a dry but chilly Saturday evening.

The big, powerful V8 stockcars had the East Anglian Championship as their main event and, while this particular class has had many false dawns in the past, it was pleasing to see that last year's gradual increase in numbers continued, with this the best turnout at Foxhall for a very long time.

As a result, the racing was extremely competitive, although no one could have forecast the drama that happened during the last two laps of the opening heat.

Barry Amas had led virtually all the way but Dennis Harris was closing in all the time and finally caught up with just over a lap to go.

He pushed him wide but, in so doing, ended up spinning himself and Amas escaped to what looked a certain victory. However, he got mixed up with the back marker on the final bend and, like Harris a few moments earlier, ended his race stranded on the inner speedway track.

Alan Gray swept past the stricken duo to take a win that was as much of a surprise to him as it was to those watching.

Gray also won heat two, although it was a little more clear cut this time and, not unnaturally, suddenly found himself elevated to one of the favourites for the title. However, he was the first one to pull out of the race, followed shortly after by the defending champion Peter Ross.

Meanwhile, up at the head of the grid, local lad Brad Moss was the surprise leader, with Cambridge's Dave Arnold a close second. Arnold passed Moss just before the end and, amazingly, the pair of them held on to take an unexpected 1-2 just ahead of world champion Peter Scott.

Seems as though the V8s are impressing the right people!
Spedeworth have asked me to add the following:
After a successful drivers meeting and racing Saturday night at Ipswich, it has been decided that there will be a trophy, sponsored by Deane, for the top white/yellow top for each meeting. Deane said that the racing was the best he has ever seen from the V8s and they put on a fantastic show.

'The Flying Dustman' Alan Gray(521),
Final Winner at Wimbledon on 6th May

Terry Harris (33), was a close second

Brad Moss (815), overcame his earlier handling
problems to finish 3rd. Brad also won the top
points scoring white/yellow grade trophy.

Not forgetting

David Burton (7), who stormed his way through
the pack to win both heats

Quote of the Day:
"Borrow money from pessimists - they don't expect it back"

* The V8s once again thrilled the large crowd at Wimbledon (6th May). Heat 1 saw David Burton (7), storm through the field in fine style to take the win. Once again in heat 2, David Burton stormed through the field whilst battles were developing elsewhere around the raceway. David Burton was the favourite for the final, going on his heat win performances, but as per usual this season, the V8s produced an exceptional display of Stock Car Racing at its best. At one point there were five cars battling for the lead position, those being Burton(7),Barry Amas (633), Brad Moss(815), David Arnold(4) & Alan Gray(521). Bumpers were going in hard and the lead was changing virtually lap by lap. Then to add to the excitement, David Burton(7) hit the fence on the start/finish straight very hard. This resulted in a restart which gave Terry Harris(33) & Peter Scott Jnr(99) the opportunity to get closer to the lead cars. At the drop of the green flag, both Harris and Scott took full advantage of the situation. With a lap to go 'The Flying Dustman', Alan Gray(521) had seen off the other challengers at the front, Harris was second, Amas third, Scott Jnr fourth and Brad Moss fifth. On the very last bend Scott propelled his car towards that of Amas, both tangling in the process and allowing Moss to sneak through and record his second podium final finish in as many meetings. Overall, it was once again a superb display from the Spedeworth V8 Stock Cars.

*For those interested - F1s have been withdrawn from two meetings at Lelystad due to noise regulations.

*Best lap times from Wimbledon: Heat 1, 15.34 Peter Scott Jnr(99), Heat 2, 15.42 David Arnold(4), Final, 15.24 Barry Amas(633)

 YARMOUTH 20th May
Meeting Report by Julie Gray

Heat 1
Simon Hogg took up the early lead followed by Barry Amas, Brad Moss and Dave Arnold. Bill Chance, driving an excellent race began working his way through the field. Simon Hogg had about a quarter of a lap lead with a close race taking place between Amas and Chance which resulted in Amas spinning on the top bend. Further back down the field there was some fast and furious racing causing quite a bit of damage which resulted in a few retirements from the race. Meanwhile, Bill Chance began to reel in Simon Hogg and eventually passed him to take the win. John Turner working his way through from the Superstar grade came in a well deserved second followed closely by Peter Guymer in third place.
A lot of repairs were going on in the pits between heats 1 and 2, unfortunately Bryan Scott did not make the line up owing to electrical problems.
Heat 2
A flying Simon Hogg again took the early lead in this race followed in hot pursuit at the start by Brad Moss, Barry Amas, Dave Arnold, David Burton, Bill Chance, Peter Scott jnr and Alan Gray which resulted in places being swapped back and forth as the laps unfolded.  A close race was ensuing between 633 and the No. 7 car who unfortunately spun on the top bend leaving Bill Chance to come through and take second place with Barry Amas holding on to third place. Simon Hogg held off all the opposition to take the chequered flag in fine style.
The final
Again Simon Hogg had the start on all of them with 633 and 7 again in hot pursuit. Further down the field a very close 4 car battle was taking place between 4, 99, 323 and 117 with 323 conquering them all. During the closing stages of the final some heavy contact between four or five cars resulted in Peter Ross and Alan Gray going heavily into the fence. Simon went on to take an excellent, well deserved final win followed home by Barry Amas and David Burton.
All in all another good night’s racing from the V8 stock cars.

Although not a Spedeworth V8, I thought some of you would like to see
these pictures of what I think is the old 'BOZZY' Hotstox that was the
1st prize in a raffle in the mid/late eighties! I also think it was powered by a V6?

The car that changed the formula!
Car set up and construction changed after this Peter O'Connor built car hit the raceways.
Very successfully raced by his father, Terry, it soon became evident that in order to compete
with it you would need a car of similar design. Over the years since, leaf springs are virtually
non - existent and  the Rover's and Jags have disappeared due to the far better handling and
traction the new set up offered. As more of this type of car appeared, the Rover's and Jags
became less competitive as the Chevy's were now getting the grip like never before.

Winner of White/Yellow trophy – 89, Bryan Scott

EASTBOURNE, 30th May - REPORT
16 Cars racing
Report by Julie Gray
Race 1
The V8 stock cars lined up on the grid for their first race at Eastbourne since 2005 with Bryan Scott (89) heading the line up. As the green flag dropped the 89 car led the field into the first lap, but soon to be overtaken by Brad Moss (815) followed by Barry Amas (633) and David Burton (7) with Peter Scott jnr (99) in hot pursuit.  As the cars settled down and found their way around the fast Eastbourne raceway, Bill Chance (117) and Barry Amas (633) tangled on the home straight leaving 815, 99 and 7 to carry on the battle for the first 3 places. Roy Eaton (17), driving his new V8, was going really well as were Peter Blomfield (42) and Peter Guymer(257). Alan Gray (521) hit the Armco on the pit straight causing him to retire. Daryl Harris (32) and Peter Ross (547)had a coming together leading to Daryl’s demise from the race. By now the No. 7 car had taken on the rest of the field to take up the lead with a good battle for second place going on between 99 and 815 resulting in 815 hitting the Armco with 2 laps to go but he managed to carry on and finish in a very respectable third place.
Race 2
Bryan Scott (89) again led the field away followed in hot pursuit by Brad Moss (815), Barry Amas (633) and David Burton (7). The 815 car soon took up the running from Amas (633) and Burton (7). The racing was very close from all the cars with 99 spinning the No. 7 car leaving the way clear for Bill Chance (117), Terry Harris (33) and Alan Gray (521) to come through. Roy Eaton (17) spun on the pit bend and 99 retired with problems. There was little to choose from the leading pack of 815, 117 and 33 with 521 in hot pursuit followed by 257, 547, 323, 324, 32 and 17. A tremendous finish to the race saw 815 and 117 tangle, resulting in 815 spinning and being caught up with 117. 815 crossed the line backwards in a photo finish with both of them ending up on the speedway track followed across the line in third place by Terry Harris (33). The stewards deemed that 815 had just crossed the line ahead of 117, 33 and 521 hoping they had got first and second but retained their original places of third and fourth. A fast and furious second heat from the V8s.

Brad Moss (815) crosses the line backwards

The final
Brad Moss soon took up the lead in the final, followed by Simon Turner (324), with 7, 117, 99 and 33 in close, hot pursuit. Once the cars had settled into the first couple of laps there was very little to choose between the leading five of 815, 7, 117, 99 and 33. Meanwhile further down the field an excellent battle was taking place between 17 and 521 resulting in the very fast 17 nudging 521 to get past and chase the rest of the pack and overtake 33 towards the end of the final which was still being led by 815, 99, 117 and 17 as 7 had dropped down the field to 6th place having gone wide on the pit bend.
A good night of fast, frantic racing had seen the return of the V8s to a very fast and narrow Eastbourne Stadium, with Roy Eaton putting in the quickest times of the night. Very well done to all the drivers and their crews.

Heat & Final win for Brad Moss, Final 2nd 99 & Final 3rd 117

Not Forgetting

David Burton, 7, Heat Winner

1st June
*Deane Wood has asked to pass on his thanks and appreciation to all the V8 drivers who raced at Eastbourne as yet again we had another good nights racing. He also said that 16 was a good turnout of cars at Eastbourne, especially midweek and considering the distance the majority of people had to travel. The racing once again was excellent. Some very good action packed racing. Keep it up and thanks, Deane.
*Eastbourne Fastest Lap Times: Heat 1, 15.75 - Heat 2, 15.88 - Final, 15.91
All three were achieved by Roy Eaton (17)13th June

*Andy Gray now has his own website, you can find it at www.521racing.piczo.com

*0.22 seconds separated the first two cars in heat 2 at Eastbourne and less than a second separated the first three in the final.

*815, Brad Moss has just launched his own personal V8 website. Very good it is too, so make sure you check it out    www.8one5.piczo.com

26th May
*As of 12th June, open practice days will be held at Yarmouth, every Tuesday from 10.00 - 17.00. Cost will be £20 for Spedeworth drivers, £25 for any other ORC drivers. Drivers who wish to practice must sign in and have their license log book with them.

16th May
* You'll probably need to read this twice! I have been in communication with Steve Rees, a BriSCA promoter, who is about to launch a new Stock Car Magazine, called Stoxscene. The editorial policy is to concentrate on BriSCA F1 & F2 in the North. Within it will be pages dedicated to the National Stox scene. He has agreed that Spedeworth V8 Stock Cars will be part of these pages.

* Deane Wood has confirmed that he will race a F1 later in the year, as reports had suggested on a couple of websites. When asked if he would be prepared to race a Spedeworth V8, he replied "Yes, anytime".

IPSWICH MEETING REPORT by Julie Gray
PETE GUYMER RETAINS BRITISH
Race 1,
The dusty, dry track conditions at the Foxhall Stadium saw the V8 stock cars line up for their first race of the evening. A good turn out of 23 cars lined up on the grid. Jim Reade (352) led as the green flag dropped followed by Steve Ward (22) and Simon Hogg (261) who was hoping for a repeat of his wins recently at Yarmouth. Simon Hogg soon came through to take up the running from Pete Keenan (19) who was overtaken by Andy Dallard (5) with Jim Reade (352), Maurice Sullivan (35) and Barry Amas (633). The waved yellow flags were brought out on lap 4 for Dave Arnold (4) and Simon Turner (324) who had been involved in an altercation with Brad Moss (815) on the scoreboard bend.

With the drivers running under caution for a couple of laps the race restarted but soon saw Andy Dallard(5) airborne, landing on Pete Keenan(19) on the scoreboard bend.

Meanwhile, Simon Hogg (261) continued to lead followed by Barry Amas (633). Roy Eaton (17), Bill Chance (117) and Dennis Harris (34) were all making rapid progress through the field and a good battle was developing between Colin Goodswen (72), who always looks good around the Foxhall Stadium and Peter Guymer (257). With 3 laps to go Barry Amas (633) took up the running and looked likely to be the first car past the post until Dennis Harris (34) charged through on the last lap to take the chequered flag and a well deserved win.

 Race 2,

Drivers drew grid positions for their place on the line up for the British Championship.
Simon Hogg (261) was in pole position, Row 2 saw Peter Scott Jnr (99) & Colin Goodswen (72), Pete Blomfield (42) on row 4,
Pete Guymer (257) on row 7, World Champion Peter Scott (98) on row 8 and race 1 winner, Dennis Harris (34) on row 10.

Simon Hogg (261) led the all in one line up down the start straight and round the first bend for lap 1 of the 2007 British Championship followed closely by Peter Scott jnr (99), Colin Goodswen (72) and Maurice Sullivan (35). Peter Guymer (257) had already started his charge through the field in defence of his title whilst elsewhere in the race Peter Scott Jnr (99), Colin Goodswen (72), Maurice Sullivan (35) and Brad Moss (815), who was not having such a successful night’s racing as he had had at Eastbourne the previous week, were all early spinners Meanwhile Peter Blomfield (42) took up the running followed by Peter Guymer (257) who was already up into second place, having started on row 7, followed by Simon Hogg (261), Terry Harris (33), Peter Scott (98) and David Burton (7), who retired from the race shortly afterwards having hit the Armco.

David Burton hitting the wall and consequently leaving the track.

Bumpers were being used to good effect throughout the race. With 5 laps to go Peter Guymer (257) took up the running from Peter Blomfield (42) and the immaculate looking car of Terry Harris (33) followed closely by Roy Eaton(17). The final 3 laps saw some very close racing between Peter Blomfield (42), Terry Harris (33) and Roy Eaton (17) with Peter Guymer having pulled away and gained a couple of car lengths lead.
Race 1 winner, Dennis Harris (34) had worked his way up to sixth place. The chequered flag went to Peter Guymer (257) who retained his title having driven a superb race. Peter Blomfield (42) crossed the line in second and Roy Eaton(17) had just managed to pass Terry Harris (33) on the final lap to cross the line in 3rd place.

Race 3 – Big Cash £££££  (sponsored by M + R Taxis of Woodbridge, Suffolk)

This was like a 'dash for the cash' with only blues, reds & superstars starting.
Dennis Harris (34), hoping to repeat his Heat 1 win led the cars round for the warm up lap and it soon became clear as the race started that he was on a charge for the big cash prize, kindly donated by M + R Taxis of Woodbridge. With Dennis Harris (34) leading Bill Chance (117), Terry Harris (33) and Peter Scott (99) were battling for the second, third and fourth places, with the British Champion, Peter Guymer (257) following closely, but Dennis Harris (34) had already built up a good lead. Alan Gray (521) and David Burton (7) were early spinners but both managed to rejoin the race . A good battle was ensuing between Peter Guymer (257) and Peter Scott (98) which concluded with Scott passing Guymer with 5 laps to go. Meanwhile DennIs Harris (34) had a length of the straight lead over Bill Chance (117) in second place and Terry Harris (33) in third with Scott (98), Guymer (257) and Scott Jnr (99) crossing the line in 4th, 5th and 6th thus ending an excellent night’s racing from the V8 stock cars.
Winner of grade award – 261, Simon Hogg

Cars lining up in the Yarmouth pits

Yarmouth,17th June, Meeting Report by Julie Gray
Race 1
The rain held off for the V8 stock cars as they lined up for their first race of the evening. Bryan Scott (89) took the lead as the pace car pulled off only to spin on the Caister Road bend on the second lap which left Jim Reade (352), Simon Turner (324), Barry Amas (633) and Dennis Harris (34) to take up the running. Colin Goodswen (72) and Bill Chance (117) were making steady progress from the back of the field. Lap 3 saw Amas(633) take the lead followed closely by Harris(34), Turner(323) and Chance(117). Pete Blomfield (42) and Scott(89) had a coming together on the exit to the pit bend, helped along by two chasing drivers which caused Blomfield(42) to spin out in a cloud of smoke onto the infield. Meanwhile a tussle for 4th and 5th place was going on between Chance(117) and Roy Eaton (17), in his newly signwritten car.  The well deserved winner at the end of Heat 1 was Barry Amas(633).

Race 1 Winner, Barry Amas

Race 2
Jim Reade (352) led the cars away on the first lap with Simon Turner (324) taking up the lead on the second lap followed by Amas(633), Harris(34) and Goodswen(72) who had already made his way through the field to 5th place. Bill Chance(117) had worked his way up to 6th: Harris(34) was closing in on Amas(633) and passed him on Lap 6 to take the lead followed by Goodswen(72), Turner(323), Chance(117),Amas(633) and Roy Eaton(17), who then spun on the Caister Road bend. With 5 laps remaining the yellow flags were waved for Simon Turner(324) who had spun and was stuck in a precarious position on the pit bend. The restart saw Goodswen (72) come through to take the lead from Harris(34) and John Turner(323) with the places for 2nd and 3rd changing at least 3 times in the last 5 laps. An exciting last lap ended with Colin Goodswen(72) taking a well deserved win, his first for a while. Dennis Harris(34) crossed the line in 2nd place, a wheel ahead of John Turner.

Race 2 Winner, Colin Goodswen

The final
Following the close finish of the second race all eyes were on Colin Goodswen(72), John Turner(323) and Dennis Harris(34) to see if a repeat performance was to be had in the final. Again Jim Reade(352) took up the early running from Turner(324) and Amas(633) with Chance(117) and Harris(34) closing in fast. Chance(117) took the lead followed by Harris(34), Turner(323), Amas(633), Goodswen(72) and Alan Gray (521). The race was progressing well with plenty of action including Roy Eaton(17) retiring onto the infield, Simon Turner(324) and Jim Reade(352) coming together on the pit bend resulting in Reade(352) spinning and sliding rapidly into the post on the pit gate. Amas(633) then spun on the Caister Road bend allowing Gray(521) to take up 4th place followed by Chance(117) and Bryan Scott(89) with Turner(324) close behind who had managed to rejoin the race. However nothing was going to stop the battle for the first 3 places which resulted in Harris(34) taking a well deserved win, from John Turner(323) and Colin Goodswen(72).

An excellent, action packed night of racing from the V8 stock cars to entertain the crowd at Yarmouth Stadium.

MEETING REPORT by JULIE GRAY
Race 1 – The English Championship
Drivers drew grid positions for their place on the line up for the English Championship. Pete Blomfield(42) was on pole with John Turner(323)on the outside. Some of the other drivers starting positions, Lee Barnard(71) was on row 2, Bill Chance(117) on row 3, Dennis Harris(34) on row 4, Robert Harris(31) and Alan Gray(521) on row 5, Terry Harris(33) on row 6, Colin Goodswen on row 7, defending Champion Pete Ross(547) and Peter Scott(98) on row 10, Pete Guymer(257) on row 11 and Roy Eaton(17) on row 12.
Pete Blomfield(42) led the drivers away for the English Championship followed closely by John Turner (323), Lee Barnard (71) and Bill Chance (117). Mark Williams (29) was an early spinner on the pit bend. Blomfield(42) led for the first couple of laps until Barnard(71) passed him on the bend but Blomfield(42) nudged him wide and momentarily regained the lead, followed closely by Barnard(71), Turner(323), Dennis Harris(34)  and Robert Harris(31), who was returning for his first meeting since his escapades at Wimbledon earlier in the season. Alan Gray(521) was an early retirement from the race. Roy Eaton(17) and Peter Scott jnr(99) had a coming together on the pit bend.

The Scott Jnr, Eaton incident that could continue at Ipswich!

This had no impact on Barnard(71) who had not only regained the lead but was building up a commanding lead. An excellent race was developing between Turner(323) and Harris(34) for 3rd and 4th position. Harris(34) eventually took the 3rd place from Turner(323) and on the very last corner of the race he also passed Blomfield(42) to take 2nd place away from the early leader. Lee Barnard crossed the line to take a very convincing win and the English Championship.
Race 2
Maurice Sullivan (35) took up the running from Bryan Scott (89) followed closely by Simon Turner (324) and Barry Barnard (16). Roy Eaton (17) was again involved with a Scott, this time World Champion Peter Scott(98), something that resembled the Peter Guinchard(258), Stuart Smith(391)incident at Oxford many years ago. Eaton(17) eventually stopped pushing Scott(98) and went past him only to spin out in a cloud of smoke on the pit bend.

Didn't anyone tell Roy Eaton there's now a smoking ban!

323, John Turner decides to give his car a wash!

Peter Guymer (257) in the meantime clipped the fence. The waved yellow flags came out to remove the 17 car which was parked in a precarious position on the exit of the pit bend. The restart saw Maurice Sullivan(35) lead off followed closely by Scott Jnr(99), Colin Goodswen(72), Barnard(71) and Bill Chance(117).The restart had caught Pete Ross(547) unawares and in turn Dennis Harris(34) found himself blocked in with nowhere to go behind the 547 car and eliminating any chance he had of winning. Sullivan (35) went wide whilst entering the pit bend allowing Scott Jnr(99) to come through and take the lead followed by Barnard(71) who had passed Goodswen (72). Harris(34) had made his way back up to forth place. The race finished with Scott Jnr(99) taking the chequered flag, followed home by Barnard(71) and Goodswen(72).

Race 3
A good field of cars started race 3 with Maurice Sullivan(35) again taking the lead, followed by Bryan Scott(89), Simon Turner(324), Pete Ross(547) and Simon Hogg(261). The blue, red and superstar grade drivers were starting to make their way through the field but Sullivan(35) had built up a good lead from Harris(34), Chance(117), Scott Jnr(99) and Goodswen(72). Nothing was stopping Sullivan(35) who was charging round the raceway with Harris(34) chasing hard and good racing ensuing for the remaining places. Maurice Sullivan(35), in this race was unstoppable and led from start to finish.

Meeting Report by Julie Gray

Race 1: As the cars lined up in the pits for their first long awaited race of the day on Saturday, what had been a warm sunny day suddenly clouded over and as the cars drove out on to the track developed into a heavy downpour which unfortunately did not give any of the drivers a chance to make adjustments to their cars for racing in wet weather conditions.
The race itself, considering the conditions was not as fast as the V8s have been in recent meetings but the drivers did very well to keep their cars on the track and entertain the crowd. Peter Scott Jnr(99) was the race winner, followed home by Pete Ross(547) & Peter Scott Snr(98). Well done to all the drivers in such conditions. Ironically, after the race the sun re-appeared and the track dried out in no time at all.

Race 2: Sponsored by www.v8stockcars.org.uk in association with 'Mr Excavator'. Grid positions were drawn from a hat with pole position going to Simon Hogg(261). An early lead was taken by Colin Goodswen(72) followed by David Burton(7), Alan Gray(521), John Turner(323) & Dennis Harris(34). Early spinners were Pete Keenan(19) & Ian Moss(875), the rest of the field avoiding them as they raced past. Gray(521) retired with a puncture having made his way up to second. This left Goodswen(72) leading, chased by Harris(34), who had worked his way through the pack. A little further down the field saw a tussle developing between Peter Guymer(257), David Burton(7) & Robert Harris(31). With five laps remaining, Dennis Harris made his move and overtook Goodswen(72) to take up the running. On the last lap, Robert Harris(31) managed to get past Guymer(257) to take third place. Roy Eaton(17) finished a creditable sixth place having started from the back of the grid.

National Championship: Cars lined up in graded order although all cars were bunched up together. A format that I know certain drivers would applaud if it were applied for all Finals.
As the cars pulled away around the turnstile bend, Pete Keenan(19) & Pete Blomfield(42) were early spinners but both rejoined the race. A very quick Maurice 'the dodger' Sullivan(35) took up the lead, followed closely by David Burton(7). Burton(7) soon took the lead, Brad Moss(815) was up to third, Colin Goodswen(72), forth and Robert Harris(31) fifth. Pete Keenan(19) unfortunately spun again and Roy Eaton(17) was unable to avoid him. By this time, Burton(7) had built up a commanding lead with Dennis Harris(34) now up to second and 'the dodger' in third, followed by Peter Scott(98). Bryan Scott(89) spun on the back straight in the closing stages but nothing was going to stop Burton(7) taking the chequered flag and the title of National Champion.
A very good return to the Ipswich Spedeweekend for the V8 stock cars. Well done to all the drivers and their crew. Thank you to all the fans for their support over the two days and a very special mention to a young 7 year old supporter called Grace from the 521 racing team. We hope you enjoyed the meeting.

No, it's not a picture from the 70s - It's Maurice Sullivan(35)
burning rubber at Ipswich in 2007!

Report: Ipswich 21st July 2007
Welcome back to ‘Big Nige’, 525 Nigel Trench who was out for his first meeting of the season.
Everyone was hoping that the torrential rain from the previous day would not give us a repeat performance of the opening race of the Spedeweekend. Luckily, despite a few spots of rain the meeting was a dry one.
Race 1
Big Nige was making a welcome return to racing. Unfortunately,Pete Keenan's car developed clutch problems on the warm up lap so he had to retire from the race and the meeting. Maurice Sulllivan(35), who must have been hoping for a repeat of his results from the Spedeweekend was first away when the green flag dropped followed by Simon Turner (324), Brad Moss (815) and Peter Ross (547). Moss(815) and Ross(547) soon passed Turner(324) with Peter Scott jnr (99), driving Peter Scott snr’s car, following close behind. A few laps into the race saw the first of the star grade drivers, the old master Dennis Harris(34) coming through with Terry Harris (33) not far behind. Alan Gray (521), who had made a promising start, blew his engine up and retired on to the infield and his meeting was unfortunately over. In the meantime the good lead that  Sullivan(35) had built up was soon dissipated by the very fast Scott Jnr(99) with 3 laps to go who came through to take the lead. A fast last lap from Harris(34) resulted in him taking third place from Moss(815).
Race 2 -
Simon Turner(324) took the lead at the start of Race 2 followed by Sullivan(35), Moss(815) and Ross(547) with Bill Chance (117) already making a move towards the front followed closely by Harris(34). Brad Moss(815) took the lead from Turner(324) on the third lap followed by Sullivan(35), Chance(117) and Harris(34) who had all passed Turner(324) who was now down in 5th place with Robert Harris (31), Scott Jnr(99) and Roy Eaton (17) close behind. The racing was fast with plenty of places being swapped but it was Moss(815) who came through victorious at the end followed by Dennis Harris(34) and Robert Harris(31). Bill Chance(117), Peter Guymer (257) and Trench(525) had all retired to the infield during the race.

Heat 3 – Big Cash £££££ (sponsored by M + R Taxis, Woodbridge, Suffolk)

Dennis Harris (34), hoping to make it a hatrick of Big Cash wins lined up for the start of the Big Cash final. Maurice Sullivan(35) again led the cars away with Turner(324) and Ross(547) following him across the line. Colin Goodswen (72) was the first of the star grade drivers to make his way towards the front followed by Harris(34)who again seemed unstoppable. Maurice Sullivan(35) was holding on to his lead well and at the halfway point was leading from Harris(34), Moss(815), Goodswen(72), Scott Jnr(99) and Terry Harris(33). With 5 laps to go Harris(34) came through to take the lead from Moss(815) and Sullivan(35) with a good tussle going on between Goodswen(72) and Scott Jnr(99) for 4th and 5th place. Dennis Harris(34) held on to his lead to take a well deserved win and the Big Cash final.

The V8s had produced some good, fast racing.

In the pits at the end of the meeting a very pleased Dennis said he thought he should show the youngsters how to do it as there are some who say he is past it, but of course we know differently.

Pete Keenan(19) & Roy Eaton(17) reduce the track width.

Remember the Brisbane Stock Rods? Well here's some more pictures of their cars - the earlier pictures shown were apparently the first ones built. Haven't they come on!

Similar in weight to ours and they run small blocks.
They can run on either 13",14" or 15" wheels.
